Room For One More

We live in a world inundated with “creatives.” Everywhere you look there is another “photographer” on Instagram, another “filmmaker” on Vimeo, and another “storyteller” who is all about capturing moments.

At least twice a week I say to myself, “Everyone is a creative these days,” and it is followed by me rolling my eyes back as far as humanly possible. The funny thing is: someone probably says the same thing about me. I’m one of those “creatives” the world is inundated with. I’m a photographer on Instagram. I’m a filmmaker on Vimeo. And I’m a storyteller who is all about capturing moments. I should be rolling my eyes at myself.

I was at a Creative Mornings in Minneapolis, and the speaker was photographer entrepreneur extraordinaire, Perry James. You should check out his website or Instagram. You’ll love his stuff because he’s got a killer eye and an even better heart. Seriously, Perry is the best. His talk was absolute money, but what stuck with me was the Q&A portion. Specifically, when a young girl in the crowd nervously asked him the question, “I really want to be a photographer, but how do I get into photography when there seems like there are so many photographers?” Perry so graciously smiled at her and wisely said something to the effect of, “Just start. There’s always room for one more. People will always need photos, and if you want to be a photographer, just start being one.”

It’s been a couple of weeks since the event, but this thought has lingured because Perry reminded me of something valuable: There’s always room for one more. If you want to be a photographer, be a photographer. If you want to be a filmmaker, be a filmmaker. If you want to be a storyteller, be a storyteller. Nobody says to someone who wants to be a teacher, “Don’t be a teacher. There are so many teachers!” No one says to a doctors or engineers or scientists, “Everyone’s a doctor, engineer, or scientist, go do something else.” There’s always room for more doctors. There’s always room for more engineers. There’s always room for more scientists. So why do we say that about creatives?

Here’s what I think we need to remember: There’s always room in the world for you to be exactly who you’re supposed to be.

Our world needs more photographers. We need more filmmakers. We need more storytellers just like we need more teachers, doctors, engineers, and scientists. If it’s your dream, if it’s your hearts desire, if it’s what you were always designed to do, well, do it. We need your eye. We need your taste. We need your heart. We need you to be everything you’re supposed to be. So what if they’re all over the place and eye-rolling worthy? Be eye-rolling worthy.

Be you. The world needs you.
